Earlier today, rumors spread online claiming that multiple Kenyan government websites had been hacked. Users on social media, including Reddit, reported disruptions on portals such as president.go.ke, nairobi.go.ke, education, waterand labour. Some claimed redirections or potential defacements had occurred.

Citizen Digital reports the same disruption of services in the major government websites. CMN verifies that this claim might be true because ealier on, any attempts to access the websites in question were in futile. Several screenshorts shared online suggests the same.

However, official sources suggest the situation may not be as severe as reported. The Kenyan government, through the KE-CIRT/CC (Kenya Computer Incident Response Team / Coordination Center), has not confirmed any widespread breaches. Previous incidents involving government websites, including NYS and IFMIS, have occurred, but current reports appear unverified.

Fact-checking organizations have advised caution, noting that many claims on social media are speculative. Government portals are reported to remain secure, with no confirmed compromise of sensitive data.

Experts suggest that website disruptions could result from DNS issues, localized defacements, or misinformation, rather than a full-scale cyberattack. Citizens are encouraged to follow updates from trusted sources, including official government accounts and reputable news outlets

For those encountering technical issues on government websites, it is recommended to report them to the ICT Authority or KE-CIRT/CC, providing URLs and screenshots where possible, to aid investigation

As the situation develops, CMN will continue to monitor official updates and provide verified information to the public.
